Safeguarding

Vision Statement

Halcyon Way School recognises the moral and statutory responsibility placed on all staff including supply staff, and volunteers to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. Safeguarding and child protection are central to the work of Halcyon Way School. In the school’s Vision and Values, “ROOTS” are identified as key to each child’s success as learners: Respect, Opportunity, Originality, Trust and Success.

To become a successful learners, children need to feel safe, secure and valued. This will be reflected through all the school’s safeguarding practices –

  • Respect for all
  • Opportunities to share concerns
  • Originality, capturing ‘the voice of the child’
  • Trust, where both adults and children feel secure and able to raise concerns
  • Successful learners will therefore thrive

Staff will work together for the safety and wellbeing of the children in their care in line with their statutory duties, supporting guidance and relevant school policies, promoting the welfare of all children regardless of age, gender, disability, race, religion or belief.

Protecting Children from Abuse

Parents should be aware that Halcyon Way School will take any reasonable action to safeguard the welfare of all children. In cases where school has reason to be concerned that a child may be subject to significant harm, ill-treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, staff have no alternative but to follow the Oldham Safeguarding Children Partnership (OSCP) procedures and inform MASH of their concern.

Radicalisation

What is Radicalisation?

Radicalisation simply means the process where someone is lead to adopt extreme political, social and religious ideals and aspirations.

The Government is now asking that schools understand the process of radicalisation and has placed a duty on school staff to help prevent it.

All staff, Governors and Trustees have completed the online ‘Prevent’ training which explains about radicalisation and how staff might be able to recognise when it is happening to a child and how school can best deal with this.

There are many websites that explain more about radicalisation and give support for you to help your child. Some are linked below:

If you have any further questions around radicalisation then please speak to Lynne Rogers, Director of Pastoral Care.

Operation Encompass

Operation Encompass is a police and education early information sharing partnership enabling schools to offer immediate support for children and young people experiencing domestic abuse. Information is shared by the police with a school’s trained Key Adult (Designated Safeguarding Lead ) prior to the start of the next school day after officers have attended a domestic abuse incident thus enabling appropriate support to be given, dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child.

The purpose of Operation Encompass is to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in, heard or witnessed a domestic abuse incident. Following such an incident, children will often arrive at school distressed, upset, worried and unprepared. Operation Encompass aims to ensure that schools trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (Sue Caine) is made aware early enough to support children and young people in a way that means they feel safe and included.

If you have any question or require any further information please speak to Lynne Rogers, Director of Pastoral Care.
